When you are discharged from hospital, you may be required to take medication, in which case you should normally receive 7 days supply from the hospital to be dispensed at the hospital pharmacy.
If you are required to continue to take the medication for longer than 7 days then you would need to provide the practice with the duplicate copy of the hospital prescription. A doctor will then issue a repeat prescription within 2 working days (48 hours) .
If you have a private prescription (non-NHS prescription) that you wish to convert to a NHS precsription you need to provide the practice with the duplicate copy of the private prescription.
A doctor will then issue a repeat prescription within 2 working days (48 hours) provided that it is possible to do so, within the NHS formulary regulations.
